The cultural triangle of Srilanka is a treasure of ancient monuments, sinhalese civilization and Buddhist temples. Within the area of this triangle lies the UNESCO world heritage site : the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya, the cave monastery of Dambulla and the Buddhist centre of Mihintale.Further south, and second only to Anuradhapura, the island’s medieval capital, Polonnaruwa, is a wonderful treasure trove of ancient Buddhist monuments, from royal palaces to colossal rock-cut statues.

Aside from these famous attractions there’s a number of lesser-visited sites including the abandoned citadel of Yapahuwa,the rock-carved standing Buddha at Aukana, the mysterious forest monastery of Ritigala and the colourful cave temple of Aluvihara.
